Assemble at the GPO, 2pm, Sat Aug. 19 for rally and march to Aldi store, Parnell st
For three months, six young people have been on strike at the Aldi supermarket in Dublin. They were sacked by Aldi for daring to join a trade union. Unhappy with a number of issues in the workplace - including the tasks they were asked to carry out, Aldi's recording of their work hours and the company's failure to pay the advertised 7 pounds an hour - the workers joined Mandate. Within days, excuses were found to sack five of them for "poor performance" and "breaking of contracts". None had ever received complaints about their work. It is clear cut victimisation of trade unionists.
The Aldi Strikers Support Group is calling on trade unionists and young people everywhere to support these workers, enduring great hardship defending basic workers' rights. They need our support to take on this powerful multinational. Aldi is just one of a number of large companies with known anti-union practices. It is in all our interests to support the stance of the sacked young workers.
Protests at Aldi shops in Germany, Belgium, France, Holland, Denmark, Britain and Australia will also take place on August 19.
