Raúl Salinas, Carlos' brother: a director of various public companies for many years, now in jail in Mexico on charges of corruption and involvement in the murder of leading PRI figure Ruiz Massieu.
Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León: elected President 21.8.94, took office 1.12.94. PRI member. Minister for Planning and Budgets 1988-1992.
Manuel Comacho Solís: senior PRI man passed over for presidency, later led negotiations with the EZLN for the government.
Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas: PRD candidate generally recognised as having won the 1988 presidential election but denied office by massive fraud.
Samuel Ruiz: Bishop of Chiapas, known for radical social views. Mediated between Government and EZLN.

Amado Avedaño: Governor-in-rebellion of Chiapas. Avendaño, editor of an independent, critical newspaper in Chiapas, was denied the post of Governor, which the usual election procedures ensured went to PRI candidate Robledo (later replaced).
