Since late 1996 hundreds of thousands of Mexicans have refused to pay what they consider to be exorbitant charges, which have tripled since the elimination of special government subsidies last year. In retaliation, Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has cut off juice to entire municipalities, leaving substantial swaths of the nation in the dark.

Following on from last years international meeting held by the EZLN in Chiapas the second gathering for humanity and against neoliberalism is taking place in the Spanish state from July 25 this year. It is expected that over a dozen people will attend from Ireland and we are currently working on an internet hookup between those at the gathering and those in Ireland. We have now maintained a constant presence in Chiapas since Christmas. It is hoped to send a fact finding delegation to join IMG members there in September. If you can finance yourself and will commit to doing a considerable amount of work on your return contact us if you want to take part in this.
