It is ironic that while Ireland denies refuge to thousands of refugees every year, Salinas who is a friend of Albert Reynolds and Tony Ryan and says he draws inspiration from Charles Haughey had no such problems. This despite the fact that his regime was responsible for detentions without trial, torture and murder of political dissidents.
Another feature of his regime was massive fraud and corruption amongst government officials. His brother for instance who was given control of a semi-state is currently under investigation for a political murder and for amassing away wealth of at least 300 million dollars in foreign bank accounts (his salary was $190,000). Alongside the wealthy elite getting richer most Mexicans saw their real wages fall massively so that 50% are now below the poverty line.We have no extradition treaty with Mexico.
The Irish Mexico group are currently circulating a letter which will be sent to Mexico's papers telling Mexicans that whatever about Salinas wealthy friends here, Irish people do not welcome him.
