Everything Stops For Tea

SIPTU members at Oerlikon in Finglas (of Dermot Bolger's 'Nightshift' fame) are currently seeking the 2% local phase of P2000 - you know the one, its automatic! The company sought a couple of quids pro quo, even though we"re not supposed to have to give anything for the 2%. Nevertheless, the people were willing to give one of the conditions: some computerisation (keypads and zappers) on the machines.

The second condition was - wait for it - that they give up their five minute tea-break in the afternoon.

The matter went to the Labour Court and it recommended payment of the the 2% and both conditions! Pause for reflection, and a cup of tea.

The besuited and sleek gentlemen and ladies of the Labour Court, custodians of enlightened and modern human resource management, pillars of partnership, want the Oerlikon workers to go without a tea-break, even a five minute one for a Diet Coke, between the hours of 1.15 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. To put cream on it, the Court recommended that the five minutes be put on to the half-hour lunch-break, from 12.45 p.m. to 1.15 p.m. Solomon despair!
