"...Asylum seekers are killing sheep in their back gardens... most refugees are not genuine... people who have a different culture should not come here..."
That was the kind of rubbish in last week's Irish Times interview with Ivor Callely (Fianna Fail TD for Dublin North Central). Following in the footsteps of party colleague Liam Lawlor TD, Calelly believes he can reap a political gain by whipping up racist hysteria about refugees coming to Ireland.
One result of statements like his (and newspaper stories like the Star's "Refugee rapists on the rampage") is the growing number of incidents of racist graffiti, racist leaflets, verbal abuse and physical attacks on asylum seekers.
Callely is standing over his interview. The Anti-Racism Campaign has called on anti-racists to stand up to him. On Saturday next (Dec. 6th) they are going to picket his constituency clinic to demonstrate that he does not speak for people like us, and that racist agitation will always be opposed. Can you spare 30 minutes to join us?
